A multichannel frequency response analyser for impedance spectroscopy on power sources
A low-cost multi-channel frequency response analyser (FRA) has been developed based on a DAQ (data acquisition)/LabVIEW interface. The system has been tested for electric and electrochemical impedance measurements. This novel association of hardware and software demonstrated performance comparable to a commercial potentiostat / FRA for passive electric circuits. The software has multichannel capabilities with minimal phase shift for 5 channels when operated below 3 kHz. When applied in active (galvanostatic) mode in conjunction with a commercial electronic load (by discharging a lead acid battery at 1.5 A) the performance was fit for purpose, providing electrochemical information to characterize the performance of the power source
Swarm Reinforcement Learning For Adaptive Mesh Refinement
The Finite Element Method, an important technique in engineering, is aided by
Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR), which dynamically refines mesh regions to allow
for a favorable trade-off between computational speed and simulation accuracy.
Classical methods for AMR depend on task-specific heuristics or expensive error
estimators, hindering their use for complex simulations. Recent learned AMR
methods tackle these problems, but so far scale only to simple toy examples. We
formulate AMR as a novel Adaptive Swarm Markov Decision Process in which a mesh
is modeled as a system of simple collaborating agents that may split into
multiple new agents. This framework allows for a spatial reward formulation
that simplifies the credit assignment problem, which we combine with Message
Passing Networks to propagate information between neighboring mesh elements. We
experimentally validate the effectiveness of our approach, Adaptive Swarm Mesh
Refinement (ASMR), showing that it learns reliable, scalable, and efficient
refinement strategies on a set of challenging problems. Our approach
significantly speeds up computation, achieving up to 30-fold improvement
compared to uniform refinements in complex simulations. Additionally, we
outperform learned baselines and achieve a refinement quality that is on par
with a traditional error-based AMR strategy without expensive oracle
information about the error signal.Comment: Version 1 of this paper is a preliminary workshop version that was

Large tunable valley splitting in edge-free graphene quantum dots on boron nitride
Coherent manipulation of binary degrees of freedom is at the heart of modern
quantum technologies. Graphene offers two binary degrees: the electron spin and
the valley. Efficient spin control has been demonstrated in many solid state
systems, while exploitation of the valley has only recently been started, yet
without control on the single electron level. Here, we show that van-der Waals
stacking of graphene onto hexagonal boron nitride offers a natural platform for
valley control. We use a graphene quantum dot induced by the tip of a scanning
tunneling microscope and demonstrate valley splitting that is tunable from -5
to +10 meV (including valley inversion) by sub-10-nm displacements of the
quantum dot position. This boosts the range of controlled valley splitting by
about one order of magnitude. The tunable inversion of spin and valley states
should enable coherent superposition of these degrees of freedom as a first
step towards graphene-based qubits
Preventive medicine of von Hippel-Lindau disease-associated pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors
Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs) are rare in von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL) but cause serious morbidity and mortality. Management guidelines for VHL-PanNETs continue to be based on limited evidence, and survival data to guide surgical management are lacking. We established the European-American-Asian-VHL-PanNET-Registry to assess data for risks for metastases, survival and long-term outcomes to provide best management recommendations. Of 2330 VHL patients, 273 had a total of 484 PanNETs. Median age at diagnosis of PanNET was 35 years (range 10-75). Fifty-five (20%) patients had metastatic PanNETs. Metastatic PanNETs were significantly larger (median size 5 vs 2 cm; P 1.5 cm in diameter were operated. Ten-year survival was significantly longer in operated vs non-operated patients, in particular for PanNETs <2.8 cm vs 652.8 cm (94% vs 85% by 10 years; P = 0.020; 80% vs 50% at 10 years; P = 0.030). This study demonstrates that patients with PanNET approaching the cut-off diameter of 2.8 cm should be operated. Mutations in exon 3, especially of codons 161/167 are at enhanced risk for metastatic PanNETs. Survival is significantly longer in operated non-metastatic VHL-PanNETs

Exceptional points in Graphen NanobÀndern
They occur in a wide range of systems and lead to many often counterintuitive effects. One such effect is the chiral state conversion upon adiabatic, circular variation of external parameters around an EP. For one encircling direction the adiabatic theorem holds, whereas for the other direction it breaks down, resulting in a different outcome depending on the encircling direction. In this thesis we identify exceptional points in armchair and zigzag graphene nanoribbons and, subsequently, simulate dynamically encircling them. We find EPs occurring generically at the edges of a bandgap and an EP emerging non-generically at real crossings in the bandstructure of armchair ribbons. We can show that dynamical parameter variations around and in the vicinity of generic EPs yield non-hermitian effects, but no chiral state conversion. We find, however, chiral state conversion when encircling non-generic EPs for a broad spectrum of parameter paths and ribbon lengths. In the end, we conclude with comments on potential realizations in experiment.7
